Science Gallery Lab Detroit and MOCAD explore the science and art of food

The event, The Science of Food and Music, will feature Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, a world-renowned musician, foodie and New York Times bestselling author; George Azar, chef and owner of Detroit’s Flowers of Vietnam and Michigan State University alumnus; and award-winning writer and filmmaker dream hampton.
The event will celebrate the science of food and memory, and examines how travel, culture and music impact food as an art form.
Moderated by hampton, the culminating discussion mirrors the themes of Questlove’s book “somethingtofoodabout: Exploring creativity with innovative chefs,” which features conversations with chefs from different cultures and explores what makes their creativity tick, and how cooking both teaches and allows them to see the world.
Questlove and Azar will share their experiences and ongoing journeys in understanding the art of food. Following the program, Questlove will sign copies of “somethingtofoodabout,” which will be available at the MOCAD store.
The Intersection series, which has held events in both Detroit and East Lansing, invites participants to explore the boundaries between the fields of science and art. This season’s featured speakers included performing artists Zach Blas and Mother Cyborg, Dr. Tonya Matthews and MSU Foundation professor Dr. Beronda Montgomery and social practice artist Bridget Quinn in conversation with art historian John Corso.
