MSU Research Foundation Professor Receives American Society for Microbiology Award

MSU Research Foundation Professor, Shannon Manning, has been awarded a 2024 Alice C. Evans Award for Advancement of Women in Microbiology by the American Society for Microbiology, recognizing her career contributions and advocacy for women in science.

Shannon Manning, MSU Research Foundation Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, is a 2024 recipient of the prestigious Alice C. Evans Award for Advancement of Women in Microbiology.

EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University Research Foundation Professor, Shannon Manning, has been honored with a 2024 Alice C. Evans Award for Advancement of Women by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have significantly advanced their careers and institutions while actively advocating for the inclusion and advancement of women in microbiology. Manning, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (MMG) within the MSU College of Natural Science (NatSci), is among 17 faculty members nationally recognized for their contributions.

"It is such an incredible honor to see my name listed along with so many extraordinary women scientists," said Manning. "I consider myself lucky in that I have been surrounded and supported by many remarkable women who served as excellent role models throughout my career and life."

Victor DiRita, Rudolph Hugh Endowed Chair in Microbial Pathogenesis and MMG department chair, acknowledged Manning's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for women in science. "Shannon has demonstrated a deep commitment to training and supporting women in science throughout her career at Michigan State," DiRita commended.

Manning emphasized the importance of recognizing the challenges women encounter in scientific fields and the necessity of creating supportive environments that facilitate growth. Her dedication to creating such an environment has made her a pivotal figure for women pursuing scientific careers.

In recognition of her achievement, Manning will receive a $1,400 cash prize, a commemorative keepsake, and an invitation to deliver a talk at the June 2024 ASM Microbe meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. ASM is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world, with over 35,000 members.

Manning is a MSU Research Foundation Professor, a title is granted to highly accomplished current or incoming faculty members recommended by their college or dean. These distinguished researchers excel in their fields, furthering scholarly, disciplinary, or research areas crucial to MSU. Recipients retain the title throughout their tenure and typically receive scholarly support for the first five years after recognition. More than 60 professors have been honored with the MSU Research Foundation Professor title.
